MUD Jeans has been revolutionising the fashion industry since 2013. By creating a circular company, in which worn jeans are recycled to create new jeans rather than ending up in landfills, MUD Jeans minimises planetary resources. You can lease jeans and decide after a year whether you want to keep them or try another model. When your jeans are worn, they are collected again by MUD to create new jeans.
To radically change the fashion industry by taking the most popular fashion item in the world, a pair of jeans, and producing it in the most sustainable way without losing a timeless sense of style.

Turning the old jeans into new ones happens at Recover in Spain, who shred the old materials and mix it with fresh organic cotton. Tejidos Royo in Spain then dyes and weaves the materials into new fabrics. The jeans are then stitched and washed by Yousstex International in Tunisia. Paper labels are provided by Vögeli AG, Switserland, sewing yarn by Cucirini RAMA, Italy, buttons and rivets by PRYM, Italy and zippers by YKK, Tunisia.
Leasing starts from 10.80 EUR / month (or pay for the jeans in full for 129.95 EUR)
75% less carbon is emitted by MUD Jeans compared to industry standard (5.9 vs 23.45 kg of CO2 emitted). This is due to low energy production techniques, land and water transportation and through using recycled cotton. Moreover, MUD Jeans offsets their carbon emissions through their collaboration with Blue Dot, making them carbon positive. They continue to work on reducing their emissions, and have decreased their CO2 impact by 20% between 2019 and 2016.
The highest energy impact in the process is ironing followed by the use of organic cotton, sewing and washing. For ironing and seing, 99% of the energy used is nonrenewable. Cotton recycling and yarn spinning is powered by 100% renewable energy by recycling partner Recover and spinner partner Ferre. Energy required per pair of jeans ranges from 67 to 190 MJ (Regular Bryce to Slim Lassen).
92% less water is used by MUD Jeans compared to industry standard. 581 litres of water are used to produce one pair of MUD Jeans in 2021, compared to the average of 7000 litres. They manage to save this amount of water through using recycling plants at their fabric mill (Tejidos Royo), returning water used for production to the environment after removing solid and organic materials as well as chemicals. At Yousstex International, they reuse 95% of the water used and replace the remaining 5% that evaporates with rainwater.
MUD Jeans’ impact on biodiversity is 47% lower compared to industry standard as less land is needed.
More than 20,000 jeans (2021) have been recycled to create new denim products. When jeans are returned, they are evaluated if they just need to be fixed and can then end up in their vintage collection, or they will be shredded into fibres ready to make new yarn.
All dyes are non-toxic and all resources and materials are safe for consumer and all everyone exposed to them in the supply chain. All chemicals that are used during the production process are non-harmful and biodegradable (Nordic Swan Ecolabel).
MUD Jeans provides fair and equal pay for everyone working across their supply chain. Factory colleagues are provided with a safe and healthy working environment so that their abilities can thrive. MUD Jeans aims to emancipate women all around the world through empowering their workers with an equal working environment. Their Code of Conduct, which all chain partner have signed, is available on their website.
