The quokka is our flagship animal to raise awareness about conscious choices. Surely you’ve seen their cute faces pop up on social media – quokka’s have become quite the tourist attraction in Australia. What many don’t know is that they are rapidly declining in number – the species has been listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Their habitats are fragmented, climate change is affecting them, and logging is destroying their homes – factors that destroy much of the planet’s biodiversity! These are problems that need to be addressed, as these animals are not the only ones affected, and we aim to inform about relevant topics on our platform.
The Conscious Quokka is an independent platform, meaning we do not profit from the sales of the brands in our Brand Catalog. We by no means promote the brands – we only provide objective information about them so you can make your own decision whether you would like to buy from them or not!
Rather than promoting other brands, our business model is based on the memberships of our fellow Quokka’s. You can check out what the membership includes here.
The money collected from each membership will go towards the maintenance of the website, to pay our hardworking team, marketing and we also donate a fraction of the money.
You can purchase a membership from anywhere within Europe. On our platform, we focus on brands that are founded and located in Europe. We encourage shopping locally to minimise the environmental footprint if you were to order from them.
Occasionally, we include brands that were founded in other continents, as long as they have distribution centres within Europe. Check out the brand’s page you are interested in to find out more about the distance the items travel.
Our offices are located in the Netherlands.
We include any European brand that describes themselves as sustainable in one way or another, either on their website, through marketing or on their products. Our catalog keeps expanding, as more and more companies want to make a change!
This way, you can decide yourself if you think a brand is really on a sustainability journey or if they are just trying to sell you their product by mentioning words like “green” or “sustainable”.
Actions speak louder than words!
We are an independent business who just wants you, the consumer, to have all the information needed to make a conscious purchase, if any at all. We are not affiliated in any way with the brands that you can find in our catalog: we have spent hours collecting all the information on European brands who call themselves sustainable so you can make an informed decision about your potential purchase.
Please do! We are always happy to hear about new brands and will add them to our list of brands to research. Please fill in our Contact Us form.
Most of the information we publish comes from the brand themselves, articles about the brand (from blogs and/or journalists), and/or we contact the brands directly. Our team digs into the bottom of each brand, reading vigorously through tons of pages of impact reports (when available), and summarises it for you so you don’t have to do the dirty work yourself.
In our Brand Catalog, you can easily browse and compare brands using filters of your choice. These filters include common labels such as location of the shop, and where the brand delivers, but also more specific filters such as whether an item is completely produced within Europe, if they are certified, or if the company offsets carbon emissions. As far as we are aware, no other platform has such specific filters. They help you to easily find brands that align with your priorities!
Moreover, we include brands from all over Europe and have many different categories of products, from toilet paper and washing machines to underwear and phones. We continuously add onto our catalog to make sure there are enough brands for you to explore.
Please let us know! We are always looking to improve our Brand Catalog and we try to be as meticulous as possible but we are only human and we might have made a mistake. You can drop us a message through the Contact Us page and we will fix it ASAP!
Ideally, our Brand Catalog would also be accessible through an application that can easily be accessed by phone. This is a plan for the future, but since we have only just launched (summer 2024), we first have to focus on establishing our company. If things go well, we will invest in building an app!
We are very grateful for all memberships from our Conscious Quokka community. As one of our main objectives is to increase transparency from brands, we do the same for our platform. Our revenue is broken down as follows:
1. Maintenance of the website (50%)
2. Personnel (20%)
3. Marketing (25%)
4. Donations (5%, which is intended to increase as our platform grows)
We will be sad to see you go, but of course you can!
To cancel your membership, please send us an e-mail through our contact page or at hello@consciousquokka.com requesting the cancellation. After this, you will receive a confirmation email including the end date of your subscription, after which you will no longer have access to our platform.
A subscription to be part of the Quokka community gives you access to our full Brand Catalog, Knowledge Hub, Blog, and Newsletters. There are a couple of subscriptions available, and you can cancel at any time.
Definitely! We donate to a different charity once we have reached a certain goal, and would love your input about inspiring charities that make a real change. Please fill in our Contact Us form with your suggestion.
We collect donations through membership contributions for about three months (or until we reach a certain amount), and use this collective money to donate to charity. The final donation ranges between 300-500 euros, but we hope to increase this goal as the Conscious Quokka develops.
One of our motivations to start the Conscious Quokka is because after starting our first jobs, we really wanted to donate. But there are so many amazing charities, projects and NGO’s out there that we were feeling overwhelmed by the choices – how are you supposed to know what has the biggest impact? We therefore wanted to make donating easier, and rotate membership donations to various charities and/or projects that all aim to make the planet a better place, ecologically or socially. This can involve nature restoration, clean-ups or social development projects. Check out the previous charities we donated to for more information.
