Does this brand offset carbon emissions and/or implement circular business practices?

Winqs actively reduces emissions through using materials that emit less carbon, and they offset everything they do produce making them 100% carbon neutral. They also implement a repair-reuse-recycle scheme meaning they encourage repairing your items if it’s broken through their partners, reuse (parts) by donating your used products through partnership with Oxfam, or send them the product for correct recycling. Lastly, they use waste materials such as plastic waste to create new products.

About The Company

Get the ins and outs

Winqs is a German company founded in 2020 that produces sports shoes and accessories for the eco-conscious athlete. This brand is not only about performance on the pitch, but their ethos evolves around sustainability and transparency. Their technologies use various materials, such as marine plastics as well as bio-based elements. Winqs also ensures that they only produce quantities that are in demand, hence, avoiding overproduction.

“The ecological footprint of the global sports industry is a disaster. This has to change. That’s why we founded WINQS, the sports brand for eco-conscious athletes.”

in depth production details

Analyze their supply chain: from the sourcing of raw materials to the people who make the product

Most of the raw materials are sourced in Europe (especially Portugal and Austria). However, recycled materials such as marine plastics or scrap rubber are from Vietnam, China, and Taiwan (no good partners have been found in Europe so far).

The majority of the products are manufactured in Portugal. However, especially since recycled materials are from Vietnam, China, and Taiwan, the production also happens in Asian factories to avoid shipping all the ingredients to Europe.

Running Shoes = EUR 160.00

Circular Running Shirt = EUR 50.00

Runner Cap = EUR 39.95

Plastic free Running Shorts = EUR 70.00

14 Kg of CO2 are emitted in average when producing a pair of running shoes. Winqs achieves carbon neutrality in three steps:

  1. They reduce their footprint through sustainable materials and processes.
  2. The MyClimate foundation calculated their remaining emissions
  3. Winqs then offsets the generated CO2 emissions through certified offset projects such as protecting the coral reefs in Madagascar.

In most of their products, you can check out their climate profile where you will find the materials and CO2e emitted.

Winqs is always looking to minimise its energy needs while optimizing all supply chains. Because some of their raw materials come from Asia, they have decided to produce their shoes there, in order to shorten transport routes and reduce their energy demand.

Compared to 1 kg of conventional cotton, one of the materials they used (cotton –  NILCOTT®) Winqs saves 56 kWh of energy.

Compared to 1 kg of conventional cotton, one of the materials they used (cotton –  NILCOTT®) Winqs saves 14,740 liters of water.

Winqs supports projects around the world to offset their CO2 emissions. Currently, they are working on a project to present the current quality and extent of “blue forests” – coral reefs in Madagascar to reduce deforestation, restore degraded areas through sustainable harvesting and to establish native tree plantations that will be used as alternative wood source.

500 tonnes of microplastic are polluting our oceans, and approximately 300,000 tonnes of plastic waste are floating in our oceans. Some of the raw materials that Winqs utilises are recycled materials such as rubber residues or marine plastics which otherwise would go to waste.

Compared to 1 kg of conventional cotton, one of the materials they used (cotton –  NILCOTT®) Winqs saves 23 kg of CO2 emissions.

Non-toxic, water-soluble dyes and adhesives that are REACH-Certified are used.

Winqs produces sporting good under fair conditions. They work along with OXFAM, who works with local partner organisations. All projects are regularly audited with regard to the defined objectives and the use of funds.
