MIRET is a development company for natural fibres that creates sneakers. Founded in 2015 in Croatia, MIRET is a company that is constantly evolving its products that are both kind to your feet and to nature. They were two brothers in their 20s and they inherited a footwear factory but later on, they realised that both the industry and the consumers were oblivious to the environmental damage caused by it. This realisation sent them on a 6-year journey to develop a better alternative.
“To empower people to choose sustainability by creating and offering a sustainable alternative to classical footwear.”

They aim to make a product that is more durable than leather or synthetic alternatives. This is tricky because a 100% natural product would be 50% less durable and have a 50% lifetime compared to a synthetic alternative, which will result in the CO2 footprint being almost double that of the synthetic material. MIRET has focused on improving this by using materials such as glue and stitching thread which are greatly improving the durability of the sneakers and hence, reducing the product lifetime CO2 emissions. They aim to replace the remaining 3% of synthetic materials with natural materials with the same durability.

The manufacturing process of leather creates huge amounts of waste. Moreover, footwear usually contains synthetic materials such as plastic and it makes it very difficult to recycle because these materials cannot be separated. Additionally, there is around 20% of secondary waste created during manufacturing that does not get recycled and ends up in landfills. The product is not compostable but they are engineered to reduce the use of synthetic and toxic materials.
The most common toxic material found in the tanning process (leather industry) is a heavy metal called chromium which is the 4th most toxic pollutant in the world. MIRET, on the other hand, does not use any toxic materials in their sneakers and are OEKO-TEX certified to prove this.
