What does this brand sell?
BuurtBuik was inspired by a Portugese project named Refood, which led to the start of this similar project in Amsterdam back in 2014. The project quickly became popular and is now active in twelve locations across the Netherlands. BuurtBuik fights against food waste by picking up food from restaurants and supermarkets that would have otherwise ended up in the bin. Within the community, they spread awareness of food waste and creatively think about minimising food waste. Alongside minimising food waste, BuurtBuik strives to create a welcoming community by structurally connecting neighbours, while also helping those in need by providing free meals. Their yearly reports contain all the details about their achievements, including financial transparency and their social and environmental impact.

BuurtBuik reduces food waste by creating free meals of leftovers from restaurants and supermarkets. They also spread awareness about food waste within the community. For example, they creatively solve food surplus by sharing it with other organisations or give food left overs to zoos. They also ensure they recycle and look for sustainable solutions where possible. In their latest report (2021), they saved over 78 thousand kg of food and served over 26 thousand meals.

One of the missions of BuurtBuik is to connect people and help those in need. They run largely on volunteers and help fight social isolation. They also strive for personal development of their team and therefore offer an Academy to train their volunteers.
They bring out yearly reports on their impact, among many other achievements, with the latest one being released in 2021 (Dutch only).
